Jamie Carragher showed no mercy to Gary Neville after his Sky Sports colleague made some eyebrow-raising comments about Lionel Messi at the Qatar World Cup.Neville was working for ITV on Saturday night, providing analysis on Argentina’s second Group C match against Mexico.Argentina needed to avoid defeat to avoid crashing out of the tournament, following their shock loss to Saudi Arabia earlier in the week, but produced a poor team display inside the opening 45 minutes.Speaking at half-time, Neville said: “Players aren’t fearful of Lionel Messi anymore.”

Messi, who was quiet in the first half by his ridiculously high standards, silenced his doubters in the second half by scoring a sublime goal before providing an assist for Enzo Fernandez as Argentina secured a crucial 2-0 victory.

The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner also picked up the Man of the Match award after the final whistle.

Carragher and Neville's Twitter exchange after Messi comments

Carragher, who isn’t in Qatar for the World Cup, tweeted: “My mate @GNev2 is having as bad a tournament as [Gianni] Infantino!”

Just a couple of days earlier, Neville had stated that Spain’s team had “no goals in it”.

The same Spain team went on to record a 7-0 win over Costa Rica.

Neville, who received some criticism for his decision to work for the Qatari-owned beIN Sports this winter, bit back by tweeting: “Better one than you back home with no one to work for!”

He also tweeted a screenshot of a headline alleging that Messi had previously called Carragher a “donkey”.

Carragher then proceeded to drop the mic by tweeting a screenshot of Neville working for beIN Sports alongside Richard Keys, Andy Gray and John Terry.

Ouch. No words were needed.

Who do Argentina play next?

Argentina will secure their place in the World Cup knockout stages with a win over Poland on Wednesday.

The Copa America holders could still qualify for the latter stages with a draw, but all four teams in the group remain on contention to reach the Round of 16.

However, Messi has now scored two goals in two games at the showpiece international tournament and will head into the game against Poland full of confidence.
