Liverpool Football Club is up for sale and you can't imagine there would be any shortage of suitors.

Not only is the Premier League side one of the most historic clubs in the land, it is also one of the most globally recognised brands in the game.

With an army of supporters spread far and wide all over the world, a history to rival any club on earth, and one of football's true cathedrals in Anfield, the Merseyside club makes for an attractive purchase.

Rumours over potential Liverpool buyers continue to grow

So it should come as no surprise then that the rumours of potential buyers are gaining traction even with the eyes of the world firmly set on Qatar for the FIFA World Cup.

The opportunity to own Liverpool doesn't come around too often so, if you can afford it, you're going to be giving it some serious thought.

That is exactly what seems to be happening in the Middle East with a report in the Mail on Sunday outlining that consortiums from Saudi Arabia and Qatar have begun testing the waters over the sale.

Liverpool enter talks with Saudi Arabian and Qatari consortiums

In fact, the report even claims that Liverpool have already entered talks with the Gulf nations as American owners Fenway Sports Group look to get as big a pay day as they can.

While the Mail reports that both groups are private entities and not state owned, it is believed that they have close ties with the royal families in Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

After Saudi Arabia's PIF (Private Investment Fund) successfully took over Newcastle, the kingdom's sports minister has been encouraging the private sector to get involved.

Saudi Arabian government encourages private sector involvement

Speaking on potential takeovers of Liverpool and Manchester United, Prince Abdulaziz bin Turki Al-Faisal said:

'From the private sector, I can't speak on their behalf, but there is a lot of interest and appetite and there's a lot of passion about football.

'We will definitely support it if any [Saudi] private sector comes in, because we know that's going to reflect positively on sports within the kingdom.'

Manchester United to battle it out with Liverpool for richest buyers

We could be in for a dramatic few months with United potentially hoping to snatch deep-pocketed buyers from Liverpool.

With two of the biggest clubs in the world suddenly and unexpectedly under the hammer, the wealthiest people on the planet will be scrambling to make sure they get a piece of the pie.

However, whether the fans of those clubs will take too kindly to a takeover from the Middle East, is another thing entirely.
