Daredevil and former high-diver Rick Winters still holds the world record for the highest high dive nearly 40 years on from the famous stunt. When you watch the footage, it's easy to see why!Winters was known for his adventurous high dives from ridiculous heights with the American rarely ever sustaining any injuries. But, in 1984, Winters would risk it all for a world record when he attempted to jump from 172ft (52 metres) into a pool below. The jump was attempted at SeaWorld in San Diego where the event would be televised for millions to watch, with the dive being regulated by the Guinness World Records. You only really feel how high it was when the camera zooms out to show Winters well above the San Diego skyline. That would make any viewer feel sick just thinking about being in the position that Winters was currently in.With his family watching and the ladder he was standing on shaking, Winters would complete a back somersault into the pool below.

Video: World record high dive

The 1980 world tandem high diving champion would still hold the record of the highest dive in the world under the rules that all divers must complete a full 360-degree flip in the air during the attempt.

Many high divers have attempted to jump higher than Winters’ 172ft record, but all sustained injuries and had to be rescued from the water.

More footage of the dive shows Winters miraculously leaving the pool unscathed from the world record dive.

Despite completing a world record dive that has yet to be beaten, the judges only scored Winters 20.5 points.

One comment described the jump as “Incredible! And genuinely impressed the record still stands.”

While another Twitter user said: “As far as I am concerned, Rick can keep the record FOREVER.”
