It's been a real year of progress in McLaren's first season in Extreme E, and they'll be really pleased with the developments they have made.

The start of the campaign was tougher than the end but that is only natural when you're a new team to something, even when arriving with the motorsport pedigree that McLaren have.

Over the course of the campaign, we've seen the team get better and better and drivers Emma Gilmour and Tanner Foust have forged a really strong pairing, with them capping off the season in fine style with the team's first official podium - without penalties involved as in Chile - as they secured P2 on Sunday in Uruguay.

A positive way to end what has been a year of progression, then, and we spoke to the driving pair over the weekend to get their thoughts on this campaign:

"It's been a huge learning curve for us," said Emma.

"We know that the series is difficult because you have such little track time, and each time we come out [to different countries] there are such big gaps [between events,] we will go to our different corners of the world and come back together for these events.

"But through everything, we've learned and we've really grown together as a team I think. We really notice it now you know, when we do all of our practicing, our processes, our driver switch, everything, we've got that routine now.

"There's that real nice sort of feeling of familiarity, which we didn't have at the start of the season. So yeah, we've learned a lot and I mean the amount of experience we've gained the season is huge."

"I think '22 was a learning round for sure," explains Tanner.

"But I think the series is so much better off than it was in 2021. The mechanical issues that were sort of out of the team's hands are so few and far between now.

"The team as well, we've gotten to know each other to being kind of a tight little family that travels around, because it really is a fairly small team, and a small footprint as part of the same sustainability story of Extreme E.

"To actually show some pace and threaten the podium spots by the end of the season, I think says a lot about the team. It's been a momentum-building series, the whole year for us at McLaren and that's all you can hope for really.

"I think now we have the feeling when we show up to a weekend, we show up with a threat to take a win. And, you know, that's a position we want to be in."

Extreme E will return in 2023 with the Team X44 taking the crown on the final day in Uruguay on Sunday, as Cristina Gutierrez and Sebastien Loeb teamed up to take the title.
