Byron Saxton might be the butt of jokes both on and off-screen but he is a valued member of WWE and deserves enormous credit for his commentary following Kofi Kingston’s amazing WWE title win at WrestleMania 35.The title win was the culmination of the “KofiMania” storyline that was largely dictated by fan support for The New Day member and a beloved WWE superstar. That the victory came over Daniel Bryan of all people made it even more special. Two wrestlers who defied the odds.More than that, it was a major milestone in Kofi’s 11-year WWE journey, black history in the company and for African wrestling.Firstly, Kofi had seemingly gone past the point of being a big-time singles wrestler, having been a tag specialist for the five years prior and the last of his four Intercontinental titles coming in 2012 and the last of his three United States titles a year later. His title success saw him become just the second black wrestler to win the WWE Championship after The Rock. The likes of Booker T and Mark Henry had won the World Heavyweight Title but the WWE belt has always been the most valued and richest prize in the land.He remains the only African-born wrestler to win the Championship, having moved from his native Ghana to the US at an early age.Byron Saxton perfectly captured the magnitude of the achievement, and it felt poignant that a fellow black man was the one to call such a significant moment. It stands alongside the best calls in WWE commentating history.Take a look for yourself below at this special moment (clip shared on Twitter by @jessithebuckeye)

Saxton ties in Bryan’s view of what the WWE title symbolises and what it means to Kofi expertly, delivering a heartfelt and genuine overview of what exactly has been achieved.

His words ring true and shows what WWE and wrestling as a whole should be about. As well as sports and entertainment, it is about showing that dreams can come true and providing hope to others. That is why Kofi’s win meant so much.

The reaction of Kofi’s teammates and brothers Big E and Xavier Woods further confirm this. It was a huge moment for Kofi, but for black wrestlers as a whole.

Since Kofi’s title win, E has joined him as a black WWE Champion. His win came over Bobby Lashley, who is now a two-time Champion. That means of the last eight WWE Champions, four have been black. It feels rather significant in the grand scheme of things.

It is why Kofi’s win ranks amongst our greatest World title wins in WWE history.
