Russell Wilson’s play could be causing some major problems in the Denver Broncos locker room following their latest loss.

The 2022 NFL season continues to be nothing but an out-and-out disaster for the Denver Broncos and their quarterback Russell Wilson. They gave up a lot to get him (quarterback Drew Lock, tight end Noah Fant, defensive lineman Shelby Harris, two first-round picks, two second-round picks and a 2022 fifth-round pick for Wilson) and when he came here, so confident were they that he would turn things around that they gave him a bumper contract to boot.

But for all that they sacrificed, they have been met with a 3-8 record as the league heads into December, and with Wilson arguably one of the worst quarterbacks in the league, or at the very least the worst when it comes to value for money, as he ranks 29th in quarterback rating, 16th in yards per game and has only given them 8 touchdowns all season (stats from Pro Football Reference).

It means that the 2022 season could well go down as one of the worst that the Broncos have gone through given how much they spent to try and make it a success, with that outlay and high expectation possibly causing a few problems in the locker room.

Russell Wilson dividing instead of conquering?

Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up (starting at 2:38), Dominique Foxworth believed that with the team doing so well on one side of the ball compared to the other, the tensions in the locker room might well be on the rise, especially considering how much the Broncos are paying him to play:

Part of this problem is their defence is so good. I think that breeds resentment, they're looking at Russell Wilson the same way the Jets are looking at Zach Wilson and that is not a good place to be when you are committed to Russell financially in a way that they're not committed to Zach, so this is a huge problem.

For reference, the Broncos came into the game yesterday against the Carolina Panthers ranked 4th in the NFL in yards per play allowed, 3rd in terms of yards allowed overall and 3rd in terms of points allowed, so if Wilson was just a little bit better, they might have a better record to show for it.

That tension was on show yesterday, as Mike Purcell got right up in Wilson’s face towards the end of the game, and if that is what is being displayed in public, then you wouldn’t be surprised if the feelings were a little bit more ramped up behind closed doors.

So it looks as if Wilson needs to work on his humanitarian skills rather than just his playing skills if he and the Broncos are going to get better and be more competitive next year, otherwise this may well go down as the worst trade in NFL history.
