Stéphanie Frappart is set to make history as the first woman to referee a men’s World Cup match. She will take charge of Germany’s crucial Group E clash against Costa Rica tomorrow (December 1st), having already featured as a fourth official during Mexico’s 0-0 draw with Poland in Group C.The Frenchwoman will be joined by assistant referees Neuza Back of Brazil and Mexico’s Karen Díaz Medina, also making it the first all-female officiating team at a men’s World Cup.With such a historic moment just hours away, GiveMeSport Women takes a look at the careers of all three trailblazing women so far.

Who is Stéphanie Frappart?

Frappart became the first female referee in Ligue 1 in April 2019, and has gone on to officiate a number of high-profile matches.

She was the referee for the 2019 Women’s World Cup final between the United States and the Netherlands, and the Super Cup clash between Liverpool and Chelsea just one month later.

The latter fixture made Frappart the first woman to officiate in a major men's European match.

The milestones keep on coming. In December 2020, Frappart became the first woman to referee a Champions League match, before taking charge of a FIFA World Cup qualifier the following year.

Frappart was one of three female referees on FIFA’s list of 36 for the 2022 World Cup, travelling with Rwanda's Salima Mukansanga and Japan's Yoshimi Yamashita to Qatar.

Before the tournament, the 38-year-old revealed hopes that the inclusion of female referees would “make things happen”.

“It’s a strong sign from FIFA and the authorities to have women referees in that country,” she said.

Who are Neuza Back and Karen Díaz Medina?

Frappart will be supported by Back and Díaz during tomorrow’s encounter between Germany and Costa Rica.

Back, who became a FIFA referee in 2014, has officiated at the Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, Copa América Feminina and the 2019 Women’s World Cup.

She was also an assistant referee during the Club World Cup in Qatar last year.

With 12 years of experience, Díaz has been an official in Liga MX matches since 2016. She was then certified as a FIFA assistant referee in 2018, and has officiated at multiple Concacaf tournaments.

After initially becoming interested in officiating while working in a snack shop at a youth sports centre, Díaz made history as the the first female to officiate in a Liga MX final in 2020.

The 38-year-old has already been a reserve assistant at this year’s World Cup, taking up the role for Morocco’s encounter against Croatia and Portugal’s clash against Ghana.
