Randy Orton is out with a "severe" injury right now, with reports stating that WWE officials are seriously concerned about his status.

In fact, Fightful Select even reported last week that people within WWE fear that Orton may have to retire, so severe is his injury right now.

And unfortunately for fans looking for some positive news surrounding Orton's status, some more information has come to light, and it's quite worrying.

How bad is Randy Orton's injury?

The reports that are out there right now, Orton is dealing with herniated disks in his back, which he was forced to undergo a procedure for.

Of course, all injuries are different, but a WWE fan on Twitter has uncovered that, based on the reports, it seems like Orton is dealing with the same injury that Shawn Michaels was in 1998.

And the bad news for Randy, Shawn was forced to retire for over four years due to the injury, again just highlighting why WWE figures are so concerned about Randy right now.

It's worth noting that medicine has obviously advanced greatly over the last 25 years, and every injury is different, so just because HBK was out of the ring for four years doesn't mean that Orton will be too.

However, the severity of Michaels' injury, and the fact that Orton is believed to be dealing with the same one, explains why all signs point towards people being really quite concerned about the legend's status.

Some fans speculated that Orton could be planned for a surprise return at the 2023 Royal Rumble pay-per-view event, as Triple H looks to bolster the rosters even more ahead of WrestleMania 39.

However, the severity of Orton's injury, and the fact that he has just undergone major back surgery, does make a return in just two months incredibly unlikely.

Instead, WWE fans are faced with several more months without Orton on TV, which is a shame considering he was arguably wrestling's most popular star before getting hurt in May.

GiveMeSport will, of course, over the coming weeks, keep you updated with all the latest news and updates on Randy Orton's injury status and a potential return to WWE TV.
