Lionel Messi put a smile on the faces of millions of fans around the world when he gave Argentina the lead against Australia on Saturday night. As the Copa America winners took their first steps in the knockout rounds of Qatar 2022, their talismanic captain rose to the occasion and scored the goal that ultimately set the wheels in motion for victory.Julian Alvarez's opportunistic strike and Enzo Fernandez's wild own goal might have followed in the second-half, but it was Messi's sumptuous finish that paved the way for a 2-1 victory. And truth be told, there was something that was just so Messi about it.Showing typical poise and precision in the penalty area, the Paris Saint-Germain star proceeded to caress the ball into the back of the net as if using the least amount of power possible that would still be able to beat Matthew Ryan. But while the finish might have been calm and collected, the celebrations were anything but with the enraptured Argentina fans in the Ahmad bin Ali Stadium losing all of their composure in an instant.Check out our 2022 World Cup hub pageBy all accounts, the atmosphere in the ground was absolutely incredible and give or take the understandably gutted Australia fans, everybody in the house will have unabashedly revelled in having seen a master at work.

How did Messi's family react to his goal?

However, none of those reactions will have warmed Messi's heart quite as much as that of his family, who were in attendance to see Argentina progress to the quarter-finals.

Messi's wife Antonela Roccuzzo and their three children Thiago, Mateo and Ciro were all in the perfect place to watch Lionel do what he does best: finding the back of the net.

Messi is, at heart, a family man and it's therefore hard to imagine him enjoying anyone loving his goal against Australia more than his closest family.

How many World Cup goals has Messi scored?

Messi's superb strike against Australia also had the added bonus of moving him above Diego Maradona in the World Cup goalscoring charts for Argentina.

Finding the back of the net against Graham Arnold's men brought him to a total of nine goals: one in 2006, four in 2014, one in 2018 and three so far in 2022.

In order to become Argentina's all-time record goalscorer at the men's World Cup, he will need to either match or surpass the 10 that Gabriel Batistuta amassed between 1994 and 2002.
