Wolverhampton Wanderers’ interest in Sevilla and Argentina international Marcos Acuña is an “interesting developing story” and the full-back could be a “genuinely good addition” for Julen Lopetegui’s side at Molineux, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The left-back is currently on World Cup duty with Lionel Scaloni’s La Albiceleste squad, preparing for Friday evening’s quarter-final with the Netherlands.

Wolves transfer news – Marcos Acuña

According to The Sun, Wolves are currently favourites to land the signing of Argentina star Acuña, who has previously worked under the club’s current head coach in Lopetegui at Sevilla.

The same report says that the La Liga side value the left-back at £12m, with the West Midlands side likely to face Premier League and European competition for his signature.

Jones has previously expressed his concern to GiveMeSport about the club’s potential signing of the 31-year-old after the full-back put in an unconvincing performance in the side’s final World Cup group stage victory over Poland.

However, the journalist feels that Acuña should be judged on his performances for the remainder of the tournament before writing the left-back as a poor transfer target.

What has Jones said about Wolves and Acuña?

Jones told GiveMeSport: “We have to see how the rest of the tournament goes for him.

“It is an interesting developing story and he would be a genuinely good addition for Wolves, I think.”

Would Acuña be a good signing for Wolves?

There can be no doubt that Wolves have struggled for solid performers at left-back this season, with Jonny Castro Otto and Rayan Aït-Nouri’s performances in the first half of the campaign resulting in interim manager Steve Davis having to play youth academy graduate Hugo Bueno in the position for the final five games before the Premier League’s break.

Therefore, a move for Acuña in January would seem like a safe bet, especially with it being a transfer which would involve the Sevilla star being reunited with his former manager.

However, the left-back’s main priority in the immediate future will be helping Argentina secure their third World Cup title, having been part of the La Albiceleste side that won the 2020 Copa América.

The 47-time international has played in all four of Scaloni’s side's games at the competition thus far according to Transfermarkt, helping the South American side keep a clean sheet in 2-0 victories over both Mexico and Poland.

An impressive average Sofascore of 7.00 for his performances at the World Cup suggests that the former Sporting Lisbon man isn’t fazed by performing on the world’s biggest stage, something which will impress the hierarchy at Molineux.

Whilst a move away from Sevilla looks to be on the cards in January, Acuña’s main priority at the time of writing will be preparing for Saturday’s quarter-final with the Netherlands in a bid to win Argentina’s first World Cup title for 36 years.
