John Cena is still one of the first people to spring to mind anytime there’s a small mention of the WWE, dominating screens and opponents alike for the vast majority of his in-ring career.

He headlined numerous major shows, held belts for unholy amounts of time and all in all was the poster boy for the organisation.

Without John Cena, the WWE wouldn’t be what it is today, with his constant appearances on the big screen helping promote the brand still, despite venturing away from professional wrestling.

Why was John Cena booked like he was?

Vince McMahon is responsible to some degree for making John Cena into the global sensation he is today, but why was he so afraid to stray away from him, keeping him in the spotlight even when the fans were booing him?

Obviously, seeing someone win every single match and rarely lose the title will get boring, just look at how many fans want Roman Reigns to be dethroned at the moment, but Vince McMahon stuck to his guns with John Cena.

Triple H has taken over as Head of Creative, and his Broken Skull Sessions interview from 2015 with Stone Cold Steve Austin gives us insight as to why Vince McMahon booked John Cena like he did.

What did Triple H say about John Cena’s booking?

When looking at why John Cena was always at the forefront of the business, Triple H said: “People will say all the time about Cena like, I read that all the time, ‘don’t we listen?’ People are tired of seeing him, they don’t want to see him win, they don’t want to see this.

“There’s such a long period of time where half the people were booing John and half the people were cheering for him, but he was packing arenas, he sold more merchandise, he was more popular than ever. Everything that we did, John was so far ahead.”

You can’t argue with the facts, if a Superstar is selling more merchandise and selling more tickets than anyone else, then regardless of what reception they get, surely pushing them and boking them as a top dog is the only way to go?

Love the Superstar or hate them, the more they sell the better the booking will be for them, it’s that simple for the business.
