Pepe wrote his name into the World Cup history books after scoring for Portugal against Switzerland.

The Portuguese ran riot in Qatar as they rattled six goals past a hapless Switzerland side to cruise to a spot in the final eight of the global carnival.

A hat-trick from youngster Goncalo Ramos stole the headlines as he filled the boots of Cristiano Ronaldo with remarkable assuredness.

However, while it was a special day for the rising star, it was also one that veteran defender Pepe will remember for a long time.

Pepe, who has been marshalling the Portugal rearguard for what feels like an age, was handed the captain's armband after Ronaldo was relegated to a watcher's brief on the bench.

He once again showed that he is the man for the big occasion, leading his team with pride and chipping in with a towering headed goal.
