Russell Wilson might never be able to recover his Hall of Fame resume after this season with the Denver Broncos, Damien Woody has claimed.

Russell Wilson’s trade to the Denver Broncos was meant to be a move that would help him reignite his career and give him a chance to once again compete for a title like he did during the glory days of the ‘Legion of Boom’ with the Seattle Seahawks.

With a solid, intimidating defense led by the likes of Bradley Chubb and Patrick Surtain, combined with the likes of Jerry Jeudy and Courtland Sutton on offense, and an offensive line that was projected to be better than the one he had in the Pacific Northwest, he had every chance to build something special in the Rocky Mountains.

However, that building process has certainly hit a few teething problems during the early stages, as the Broncos have had a disastrous year, currently sitting at 3-9 and with their chances of making the playoffs very slim indeed.

Russell Wilson’s really bad year in the Rockys

A large part of their poor showing this year can be down to the impact, or lack thereof when it comes to Wilson and his performances this year, as he ranks 16th in the league when it comes to yards per game, 29th in quarterback rating and has thrown just 8 touchdowns all season, a far cry from the player he was in Seattle where there were some baffled at the fact his play up there had never got him serious MVP consideration.

And this step back in play might hurt him when the time comes for him to be considered for the Hall of Fame when he eventually retires, according to Damien Woody.

Speaking on ESPN’s Get Up (starting at 3:16), Woody claimed that this season is likely to always be held against him in the future, because if he was as great as he is being paid like, then he would have been able to overcome some of the deficiencies of this year, and that ultimately means he isn’t on track to being in the Hall of Fame:

Great players, they can overcome bad coaching. If you're talking about a guy who aspires to be a Hall of Fame player, there is no way you should look this bad. People out there can try to blame Nathaniel Hackett, I'm sorry, this falls on the player, and this is very revealing, as far as Russell Wilson is concerned because I look at it in two ways.

One, you make this blockbuster trade and you have this stinker of a season. I don't think that ever gets wiped away. You talked about time, I don't think this will ever be wiped away as far as memory and what compounds it all is Geno Smith is balling in Seattle. That's what makes this whole thing even worse.

With 9 Pro Bowls and a Super Bowl to his name, Wilson has some things that might be considered necessary to make it to the Hall of Fame one day, but as the Seahawks continue to be OK without him, and it’s starting to look like he was just a side-piece to the main show up there under Pete Carroll, you can’t help but think his chances have taken a big shot.

And with this season being a disaster, it makes you wonder what he and the team are going ti have to do in order to get back in credit and help Wilson’s chances out.
