Tottenham Hotspur could look to bolster Antonio Conte’s squad with the signing of Borussia Monchengladbach and Switzerland goalkeeper Yann Sommer, according to journalist Dean Jones.

The goalkeeper had been on World Cup duty with Murat Yakin’s side this winter, before being eliminated from the tournament in the last 16 at the hands of Portugal.

Tottenham transfer news – Yann Sommer

According to ESPN, Manchester United are looking at striking a potential deal for Sommer in the summer, with the 33-year-old’s £62k-per-week contract at Monchengladbach expiring at the end of the season.

Meanwhile, Tottenham’s first-choice stopper Hugo Lloris’ £100k-per-week deal at the north London club expires in the summer of 2024, suggesting that Spurs will have to start looking for alternatives to the 35-year-old goalkeeper.

Former Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster seems unlikely to step into the Lilywhites’ number-one role in the coming years, so Conte and Fabio Paratici may turn to the transfer market to evaluate their options.

And Jones has been told that Sommer is a name on Tottenham’s radar, despite supposed interest from Manchester United.

What has Jones said about Tottenham and Sommer?

When speaking about potential Tottenham transfer targets, Jones told GiveMeSport: “Yann Sommer is one that I've been told is on the radar. They’re just looking to see what he's looking to do next. So, I think various things will crop up.”

How did Sommer perform at the World Cup?

Despite being between the sticks for Switzerland’s embarrassing 6-1 defeat at the hands of Portugal in the last 16 of the World Cup, Sommer certainly displayed enough in Qatar to show why he is still the national side’s number one choice in goal.

The Monchengladbach star played a pivotal part in the side’s 1-0 victory over Cameroon in their opening match of the tournament, with the three points earned in that game pivotal for the side’s qualification to the second phase of the tournament.

WhoScored has awarded the stopper a 6.67 rating for his showings in Qatar, which ranked the Bundesliga veteran as Switzerland’s fourth-best performing player at the World Cup this term.

That is on top of the three clean sheets he has helped Monchengladbach secure so far this season, with the German side sitting eighth in the top flight at the time of writing.

Therefore, whilst he may not prove to be the most glamorous option, Conte and Paratici could do a lot worse than to convince the experienced goalkeeper to take over the number-one mantle from Lloris at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium for the next couple of seasons.
