Leeds United are back in the race to sign Atletico Madrid forward Matheus Cunha but it depends on the actions of one of their relegation rivals, transfer insider Dean Jones has revealed.

Jesse Marsch's side are currently in the midst of a tight relegation battle at the bottom of the Premier League and could be eyeing up reinforcements in January.

What’s the latest news involving Matheus Cunha?

Having earned a big-money move to La Liga giants Atletico Madrid on the back of a breakout season with Hertha Berlin in 2020/21, Cunha has failed to impress during his time in the Spanish capital.

Atletico has often acted as a graveyard for promising young forwards, who struggle to adapt to Diego Simeone's attritional playing style.

Much like those who have gone before him, Cunha's return of seven goals and seven assists in 55 Atletico appearances as per Transfermarkt, has failed to live up to the expectation from when he arrived.

Now rumoured to be on the move, a number of Premier League clubs had been thought to have expressed interest in the Brazillian with 39 club goals in his senior career, but it was Wolverhampton Wanderers who led the way.

Fabrizio Romano reported that Wolves were in talks for Cunha, while Jones previously told GMS that Wolves were frontrunners.

However, in a dramatic turn of events, Leeds have emerged as a potential rival to fellow strugglers Wolves for Cunha's signature.

What has Jones said about Cunha?

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jones revealed that Leeds would be willing to spend big on the sought-after Brazillian forward.

"If Wolves can't tie it up, then it will be one to look out for," explained Jones.

"I was sceptical of Leeds' interest at first, but there are actually some interesting factors that could make this doable."

Leeds had been heavily linked with Cody Gakpo in the summer, with the World Cup star admitting he came close to joining the Yorkshire-based outfit.

But now Marsch has his eyes on the potential big-money arrival of Cunha from Atletico.

"Cunha is a really interesting player for Leeds to be considering," Jones told GMS.

"But it comes down to whether or not Wolves actually decide to go ahead with this."

What would Cunha offer Leeds?

Leicester City are the only side in the bottom half of the Premier League to have scored more goals than Leeds United this season, suggesting the need for attacking reinforcements is less of a priority.

However, the fitness and injury concerns of Patrick Bamford have blighted Leeds' attack so far this term, with Cunha providing the perfect option to Marsch's attack.

A skilful forward, capable of scoring a variety of goals, Cunha would offer an added level of dynamism to an often one-dimensional forward line.

Capped at senior level for Brazil, despite his tender age of 23-year-old, Cunha comes with a wealth of experience and would boost Leeds' survival hopes if he joined.
