Lionel Messi has led Argentina to the World Cup final for the second time in his career.

Aged 35, it will almost certainly be his last chance of lifting football's ultimate crown and emulating his Argentina hero Diego Maradona.

Maradona also led the nation to two World Cup finals (1986 & 1990) winning it at his first attempt in Mexico in 1986.

He would then go on to lose to West Germany in the final in 1990.

As a result, Maradona is treasured above all in his homeland and revered as more of a god than a human being.

Whereas Messi has endured a more up and down relationship with the Argentine public despite achieving considerably more in the game at club level than Maradona ever managed to.

When he reached the final in 2014 and lost to Germany, the result was met with widespread dismay from those in his homeland rather than a feeling of appreciation for his and the team's efforts that tournament.

Which is something that has clearly always bothered Messi - who even announced his retirement from international football in 2016 before reversing his decision soon after.

However, guiding the nation to glory on Sunday would no doubt prove the crowning achievement in his career, moving him alongside Maradona in the pantheon of Argentinian legends.

Never mind securing his status as the greatest of all-time for many outside of Argentina.

And with arguably the biggest game of his illustrious career on the horizon, it seems fitting to look back to where it all began for Messi with Argentina.

When did Messi make his World Cup debut for Argentina?

Messi first appeared at the World Cup in 2006 as Argentina took on Serbia and Montenegro in the group stage of the competition.

With La albiceleste winning 3-0, the decision was taken to bring a young Messi into the fold in the 75th minute of play.

There wasn't much time for Messi to make an impact but that didn't matter. He assisted Hernan Crespo in the 88th minute before latching onto a Carlos Tevez pass to get on the score sheet himself and finalise the 6-0 drumming.
