Lionel Scaloni made history on Sunday night as he led Argentina to their third World Cup title.Scaloni, a member of Jorge Sampaoli's coaching team at the 2018 edition, has proven his doubters wrong by securing the biggest trophy in men's football while still having never managed in club football and ranking as the youngest boss at the tournament.Lest we forget, after all, that Diego Maradona reacted to his appointment by saying: "He’s a great lad but he can’t even direct traffic. How can you give the national team to Scaloni? Are we all mad?"

How important was Scaloni for Argentina?

But alas, here we are with Scaloni following in the footsteps of César Luis Menotti and Carlos Bilardo in leading Argentina to the trophy that they covet the most.

And you've got to credit the 44-year-old for his important role in Qatar, especially when you consider the heartache and tension that Argentina experienced on their way to winning the final.

From losing the opening game with Saudi Arabia to throwing away 2-0 leads against the Netherlands and France, Scaloni was able to steer the Argentine ship through choppy waters by staying cool, calm and collected on the touchline.

FIFA World Cup Winners: Can you name these 20 obscure champions?

In fact, that was something of a theme for Scaloni throughout the tournament as neither major highs nor crushing lows ever seemed to make that much of a dent on his facial expression.

And believe it or not, that was even the case for a few remarkable moments after Gonzalo Montiel fizzed home the winning penalty to confirm Argentina as champions of the world.

Footage showed the former West Ham United player barely cracking the slightest of smiles as everyone around him burst into uncontrolled joy, dropping to their knees and celebrating wildly.

Surely, surely Scaloni wouldn't still play the strong and stoic character even when Argentina had actually gone all the way and made Lionel Messi's come true?

How did Scaloni react to winning the World Cup?

Well, don't worry, folks, because the raw emotion eventually showed itself in good time with tears slowly welling in Scaloni's eyes as he embraced his staff and then enjoyed a quiet moment in the dugout.

However, it was when Scaloni decided to walk onto the pitch that the true gravity of the situation hit him like a tonne of bricks with gentle tears escalated to unbridled weeping in the blink of an eye.

Remarkable footage shows the exact split-second that the sledgehammer of emotion hit him square between the eyes and the sheer ecstasy and joy of victory came out for all to see.
