Leeds United signing Atletico Madrid and Brazil forward Matheus Cunha would be a "big coup", says journalist Pete O'Rourke.

The 23-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League, and the Whites are one club who are thought to be really keen on him.

Leeds transfer news - Matheus Cunha

According to The Athletic, Leeds are interested in signing Cunha, who they tried to bring to Elland Road in the summer of 2021.

The Daily Express' Ryan Taylor also told GiveMeSport recently that Leeds, as well as Aston Villa and Wolves, are looking at the former Hertha Berlin man.

Cunha has not shown his best form at Atletico, failing to score a single goal this season so far, as per Transfermarkt.

With that in mind, now could be the time for Cunha to move on, with a switch to the Premier League seemingly a possibility.

What has Pete O'Rourke said about Matheus Cunha and Leeds?

O'Rourke thinks Cunha would be a huge addition to Jesse Marsch's squad but says Leeds will face big competition for his signature.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: "It'd be a big coup if they could land Matheus Cunha, who does seem like he is available. There's going to be big competition for his signature. We've already seen the likes of Wolves and Aston Villa strongly linked with him."

Can Leeds win the race for Cunha?

It does not seem impossible. While Wolves do appear to be at the front of the queue for Cunha's signature, nothing has been agreed yet, with Julen Lopetegui saying as much.

"We have several open options and he is one of them,” the Wolves manager said on Spanish radio (via Express & Star) earlier this month when discussing his side's interest in the Brazil international. "In football, until you close the operations, they are all up in the air."

The Midlands club are currently at the bottom of the Premier League table, though. If Leeds or Villa made a strong play for him, it would not be a shock if he leaned towards joining one of those sides instead.

Whatever the case, it is clear to see that Cunha, who is earning £49,000 a week at Atletico, according to Capology, has options if he does decide to leave the Wanda Metropolitano. And given how things have gone for him in Spain since arriving from Germany, he may just decide to explore them.
