Chelsea are the 'frontrunners' in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Youssoufa Moukoko in January, CBS reporter Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport.

Blues boss Graham Potter will be handed an opportunity to bolster his Stamford Bridge squad when the transfer window reopens next month.

Chelsea transfer news - Youssoufa Moukoko

According to The Times, Chelsea are in the hunt to land Moukoko, but he wants to be convinced that he will not be limited to a bit-part role if he moves on from Dortmund.

The report suggests the 18-year-old's current employers are preparing to put another contract offer on the table after seeing a deal worth £4.4million-per-year turned down, while Manchester United and Liverpool are also monitoring his situation.

There is ongoing uncertainty over Moukoko's long-term future as his Dortmund deal is set to expire next summer, meaning he can open negotiations with overseas suitors at the turn of the year.

To make matters worse for Dortmund, agent Patrick Williams has revealed that his client is not close to penning a new contract at Signal Iduna Park.

Barcelona are another club looking to pounce, although they are unwilling to pay a transfer fee, but journalist Simon Phillips has recently told GiveMeSport that Chelsea have a chance to acquire Moukoko's services during the early stages of 2023.

What has Ben Jacobs said about Moukoko?

Jacobs understands that Chelsea are at the front of the queue to sign Moukoko during the January transfer window.

The journalist believes Dortmund are still desperate for the striker to sign on the dotted line and remain with the Bundesliga giants.

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: "Chelsea are the frontrunners at the moment and he fits their mould absolutely perfectly.

"I think that is why they're very seriously entertaining that particular signing and we know from Moukoko's agent that he hasn't yet and isn't close to signing a new deal at Dortmund.

"This is a very interesting scenario because, from Dortmund's point of view, they'll want him to sign in January and that will rule out a January move."

Would Moukoko be a good signing for Chelsea?

It could be argued that Moukoko would be an upgrade on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who only moved to Chelsea in a £10million deal during the final stages of the summer transfer window.

That is because FBref statistics show the Germany international has averaged more goals, assists and shots per 90 minutes than the current Blues frontman this season, emphasising that he could make Potter's side an even more dangerous force in the final third of the pitch.

The long-term absence of Armando Broja, who is set to miss the rest of the season after sustaining an anterior cruciate ligament rupture earlier this month, also means Chelsea desperately need to recruit a new attacking option.

Moukoko may be in the early stages of his career, but he has already shown that he knows where the back of the net is and has chalked up 12 goal contributions for Dortmund this term.

Luring the teenager to Stamford Bridge would be an astute piece of business from Chelsea.
