Manchester United have spoken to Joao Felix's agent, the reliable Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

However, the transfer expert says there are no negotiations currently going on with Atletico Madrid because of their asking price.

Man United transfer news - Joao Felix

CBS reporter Ben Jacobs recently told GMS that United are one team who are in the conversation to sign Felix.

It is going to take huge money to bring the forward to Old Trafford, though, with the Evening Standard claiming that Atletico have slapped an £86m price tag on his head.

United are likely to be in the market for a new attacker next month when the transfer window opens.

The Manchester club have, of course, lost Felix's Portugal team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo after terminating his contract.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Joao Felix and Man United?

According to Romano, United have spoken to Jorge Mendes about Felix but are yet to open negotiations with Atletico.

Speaking to GMS, the Italian journalist said: "In this case, it's about the price because Man United have had many conversations with his agent, but at the moment there is no negotiation, no concrete negotiation because of the price."

Will Man United pay Atletico Madrid's asking price?

It is quite clear that United do have some interest in Felix, but it really is hard to imagine them spending over £80m on him.

The 23-year-old has talent. In his final season at Benfica, he came up with over 20 goal contributions in just 26 league appearances, as per Transfermarkt. However, at Atletico, supporters of the Spanish club have not seen enough of it.

Under Diego Simeone, he scored just six times in his first La Liga campaign and managed just one more in his second. Will his output go up under a less pragmatic manager? Only time will tell.

All in all, it would be a shock if Felix ended up joining United for £86m. Because of that price tag, someone like PSV Eindhoven's Cody Gakpo, who the Red Devils are planning to make a bid for, according to transfer insider Dean Jones, seems like a much more attainable target.

If Felix's price tag comes down or he becomes available for loan, then that changes everything. As of now, though, it seems like United and Erik ten Hag will be concentrating on other names as they look to bolster their attack.
