Everton will be hoping that Anthony Gordon's new deal gets new life out of the winger and helps him develop into a leader, says journalist Dean Jones.

The 21-year-old is thought to be close to signing a fresh contract at Goodison Park after strong interest from Chelsea during the summer.

Everton contract news - Anthony Gordon

According to The Telegraph, Gordon is about to put pen to paper on a new long-term deal after being chased by Chelsea and their London rivals Tottenham in the last transfer window.

The Sun had previously reported that contract talks had become a problem because the English youngster wanted £100,000 a week, but that no longer looks to be an issue.

The above will come as a huge boost to Frank Lampard, with Gordon being one of his most important players.

As per Transfermarkt, he has only missed one Premier League match so far this season.

What has Dean Jones said about Anthony Gordon and Everton?

Jones thinks Everton's plan is to get Gordon to sign a new deal to help him settle and then grow as a footballer and leader.

Speaking to GiveMeSport, the journalist said: "I think the plan here is to get him on a new deal and then get new life out of him as a footballer first and foremost, but also a long-term leader of this team and an influencer of this team to make things happen."

What is Anthony Gordon's position?

Gordon is a winger by trade but has spent some time playing up front this season, as shown on Transfermarkt.

With the England U21 international becoming a more versatile player, it is great news that Everton are keeping hold of him.

Of course, the club would have been desperate to retain his services anyway because of his potential, but the fact that he has played as a striker this term now makes him even more valuable to Lampard.

The Toffees boss just does not have too many reliable forward options right now, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin struggling to stay fit and Salomon Rondon recently having his contract terminated.

Calvert-Lewin's absence at the beginning of the season is why Gordon has minutes as a striker this term.

Ideally, Everton will dip into the transfer market next month and sign a new No.9. But if not and Calvert-Lewin continues to pick up injuries, you would expect Gordon to get more game time up front in the second half of the campaign.
