Tottenham Hotspur need to be careful when it comes to Antonio Conte's transfer market requests, believes journalist Dean Jones.

With the Italian yet to sign a new contract and commit to the club, Jones thinks it would be unwise to splash out on his targets.

Tottenham news - Antonio Conte

Jones recently told GiveMeSport that Tottenham and Conte have held talks about a fresh deal.

However, it appears that Spurs are finding it hard to convince the 53-year-old to put pen to paper, with The Telegraph claiming that he is in no rush to make a decision on his future.

Conte's existing contract expires at the end of the season, but the north London club have the option to extend it by another 12 months.

Conte and his side did not make the kind of return to action they would have hoped for on Monday, drawing 2-2 with Brentford in their first post-World Cup fixture.

What has Dean Jones said about Tottenham and Antonio Conte?

With Conte yet to commit his future to the club, Jones thinks it would be risky for Tottenham to spend heavily on the players he has demanded.

Speaking to GMS, the transfer reporter said: "It's one thing for Conte to outline, let's say, two prime signings for January. Conte doesn't want club signings. He wants elite signings that immediately improve a starting XI, and that's fine because Tottenham do want success quickly.

"But ultimately, if Conte isn't willing to commit his own future to the club beyond the end of the season, the club have to be a little bit careful because what if they spend a load of money on two signings and are paying them 150 grand a week, 200 grand a week and then suddenly the next manager doesn't want them and they're left with players that don't fit in?"

Who could Tottenham sign in January?

If Tottenham's plan is to back Conte with new additions, one player they could bring in is Atalanta's Ruslan Malinovskyi.

According to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, he is someone who is appreciated at Hotspur Way and was a target for the club during the summer.

Elsewhere, a report from 90min claims Tottenham have spoken to the representatives of Barcelona star Memphis Depay.

It remains to be seen how much Spurs are willing to support Conte next month, but with the battle for Champions League football a truly competitive one this season, the former Inter Milan and Chelsea boss may feel that he needs reinforcements.
