Leeds United have an 'interest' in Kai Wagner and could look to strike a deal which would see the Philadelphia Union star head to Elland Road, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

According to The Athletic, Leeds are looking at tempting Wagner to Yorkshire as he would be available for a low fee.

The report suggests the 25-year-old has been identified as a target due to the Whites prioritising the acquisition of a new left-back during the early stages of 2023.

Leeds are long-term admirers of Wagner as they held talks over a switch during the final weeks of the summer transfer window, with Marsch driving the pursuit.

Philadelphia Union boss Jim Curtin also admitted to holding discussions with the Whites' chief over the German after he had worked his way onto their radar.

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor recently told GiveMeSport that Leeds have money to spend next month thanks to selling Raphinha to Barcelona earlier this year.

Jones understands that Leeds are keen on signing Wagner after failing to strike a deal during the summer transfer window.

The journalist feels Marsch has set his sights on acquiring the left-back after gaining intel from a host of contacts in his homeland.

Jones told GiveMeSport: "Obviously, there is an interest here, so that's a good start.

"Marsch is going to have extensive contacts and understanding of the player through people he knows in terms of whether he is a good fit."

Wagner was Philadelphia Union's top performer during the 2022 Major League Soccer campaign, with none of his teammates bettering an average match rating of 7.26, according to WhoScored.

Data also shows that he led the way for assists - after claiming nine - so he played a key role in his current employers winning the Eastern Conference title before falling short of clinching the MLS Cup due to a penalty shoot-out loss to Los Angeles FC.

Wagner has shown throughout his career that he is capable of being a threat in the final third of the pitch as he has racked up 36 goal contributions in 209 senior club appearances.

But he is also a reliable figure in the backline as Sofascore statistics show he averaged 1.7 interceptions, 1.6 clearances and 1.4 tackles per MLS outing last term as he helped Philadelphia Union to keep 15 clean sheets.

Current boss Curtin has previously described Wagner as 'talented' and 'very strong', so he could be a shrewd addition to the Leeds squad if they succeed in getting a deal over the line.
