Tottenham Hotspur are unlikely to sign any players who will make an immediate impact in Antonio Conte’s starting XI at Hotspur Way this January, journalist Paul Brown has told GiveMeSport.

Spurs are looking to secure a place in the Premier League’s top four for the second consecutive season.

Tottenham transfer news – January

Tottenham made eight signings across various permanent and loan deals during the summer transfer window in a bid to build a squad in Conte’s mould.

The most notable of these was the £60m signing of Everton and Brazil striker Richarlison, whilst Yves Bissouma and Ivan Perišić were also key additions to the Lilywhites squad at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

However, the club still have some gaps in the squad which Conte would like to fill, most notably a left-sided centre-back.

Journalist Dean Jones has recently suggested to GiveMeSport that Fabio Paratici and Daniel Levy must be careful about signing every player that Conte demands in north London, with the Italian yet to commit his future to the club at the time of writing.

And Brown’s comments seem to suggest that the Spurs hierarchy are likely to do just that in January, with the journalist suggesting the club may just be targeting younger players who they can develop next month.

What has Brown said about Tottenham?

Brown told GiveMeSport: “Ideally, Conte would like the calibre of player who can come in and make an immediate impact and a big difference for Spurs.

“But the business model there that he keeps talking about suggests that they won't do that in January and they'll just look for younger players they can assimilate and bring in slowly.

“So, it's unlikely you'll see Spurs make a signing that is going to have a massive impact straightaway in the first team.”

Who could Tottenham sign in January?

In terms of that coveted left-sided centre-back position, Conte seems to have set his sights on RB Leipzig and Croatia international Joško Gvardiol, with the Daily Express suggesting that a move for the 20-year-old alongside Sporting Lisbon full-back Pedro Porro could be an option next month.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail has reported that Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford could be another target for the north London side, with the 28-year-old’s new five-year contract offer yet to be confirmed by the Toffees.

In terms of midfield additions, The Times report that the Lilywhites are keen on a deal for Juventus and France midfielder Adrien Rabiot, having already experienced success with previous purchases from the Serie A giants in Rodrigo Bentancur and Dejan Kulusevski.

However, with the club yet to have the future of Conte confirmed, it looks as though first-team additions could be in short supply this month, with the club potentially choosing to place their faith in the additions they made during the summer window.
