Chelsea could welcome at least "three first-team players" to Stamford Bridge in the January transfer window, journalist Simon Phillips has told GIVEMESPORT.

The Blues spent over £250 million in the summer market - an all-time record for any club in a single transfer window.

What's the latest news on Chelsea ahead of January?

Often busy when it comes to transfer windows, Chelsea once again looks likely to be active in the upcoming January window. It comes just months after the Blues set the world record for the most money spent by any club in a single transfer window, with Todd Boehly flexing his financial power early on.

The American businessman, who acquired the club in a deal worth a reported £4.25 billion, was quick to back the then-Chelsea manager, Thomas Tuchel, despite discontent within the ranks during pre-season. A total of nine new players were welcomed into the club, with the likes of Raheem Sterling, Marc Cucurella and Wesley Fofana all making moves worth £45 million or more.

Just weeks after the summer window slammed shut, Tuchel had been sacked as Chelsea boss, with Graham Potter taking over the reins at Stamford Bridge. Now with the January window in sight, it looks as if Boehly is prepared to spend big once more, with Potter eyeing up a number of reinforcements.

What's Phillips said about Chelsea's January transfers?

Speaking to GMS, journalist Phillips admitted Chelsea are likely to be active in the upcoming window.

"Before recent injuries, I was told Chelsea wanted a new centre-back, a new midfielder and a new striker in January," Phillips told GMS.

"So that's the three first-team players Ben Jacobs has mentioned as what I understand it to be."

Who will Chelsea target in the January transfer window?

CBS journalist Ben Jacobs hinted that Chelsea could be in line for another busy transfer window on Twitter, stating that the Blues are hoping "to add at least three first-team players".

Perhaps the most advanced move so far is that of Benoit Badiashile - a promising 21-year-old centre-back from Monaco. According to The Athletic, Chelsea have agreed a deal for Badiashile in defence after being priced out of a move for summer target and World Cup breakout star, Josko Gvardiol.

As for midfield, Enzo Fernandez is a player already on Chelsea's radar, following the Argentine starlet's World Cup-winning campaign. Fernandez took home the Young Player of the Tournament award from Qatar, with the Guardian reporting Chelsea have already opened talks with the Benfica midfielder. Phillips previously told GMS that Chelsea are "pushing hard" to secure the capture of Fernandez, despite Benfica publically stating they have no interest in selling the player.

Elsewhere, wantaway Atletico Madrid star Joao Felix is subject to interest from various Premier League sides, with Chelsea unsurprisingly one of those clubs. According to The Telegraph, Chelsea have emerged as a potential buyer for the Portuguese international, who arrived at Atletico for a club-record £113 million in 2019.
