Manchester United target Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting ‘might come into the frame’ to replace Cristiano Ronaldo, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Bayern Munich striker has entered the final six months of his current £60,000-per-week contract and is believed to be on the Red Devils’ radar as a result.

Manchester United transfer news – Choupo-Moting

Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg revealed back in November that United are ‘seriously interested’ in prising Choupo-Moting away from the Allianz Arena during the January transfer window.

It’s claimed that Erik ten Hag’s charges have ‘inquired’ about the Cameroon international and that he is amongst the candidates being lined up as potential replacements for Ronaldo.

"And, yes, we are aware we lost a striker, so I think yes, we have to get a striker in,” Ten Hag recently admitted.

"But it has to be the right one, and the right one is the one…he needs to bring the quality in the team, and not just an addition to the squad because that gives you only problems. And, you know, the criteria is high here at Man United."

However, Bayern sporting director Hasan Salihamidzić has recently stated that the Bundesliga giants would ‘love to keep’ Choupo-Moting and that contract talks are expected.

What has Jones said about Choupo-Moting?

Jones has told GMS that although Choupo-Moting isn’t ‘being lined up right now’ he does fit the profile of player who United could look to bring in this winter.

He said: “I don't think he's genuinely being lined up right now, but it is one of those names that might come into the frame.

“Realistically, if United are looking at a player to just solve a situation short term, then you probably are looking at a player in their thirties. And to be honest, United don't have many players in their thirties right now, so maybe that wouldn't be the end of the world.”

Would Choupo-Moting be a good signing?

Choupo-Moting has previous Premier League experience with Stoke City and has won a plethora of trophies with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern since departing the Potters, leading to praise from Ander Herrera.

The 6 foot 3 ace is enjoying one of the most productive campaigns of his senior career this term, registering 11 goals and three assists in 16 appearances across all competitions.

Only time will tell whether United decide to make a formal approach for Choupo-Moting or not, but he could prove to be a capable stop-gap should he make the switch.
