The San Francisco 49ers defense has left former All-Pro cornerback Richard Sherman worried despite their win against the Las Vegas Raiders.

The San Francisco 49ers are the epitome of a team that is getting ‘hot at the right time’ as the playoffs get closer and closer and the regular season draws to a conclusion. Following their win over the Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday, they have now won nine games in a row, the most of any team in the league and have put themselves in a position to maybe even take the #1 seed in the NFC.

If you’d have said that after the first few weeks of the season though when starting quarterback Trey Lance went down with an ankle injury when they were 1-2, then you might have got some odd looks, perhaps even more so when Jimmy Garoppolo went down in Week 14 which meant third-stringer and rookie Brock Purdy had to take control.

However they have managed to get through the season with a 13-3 record heading into the final game of the season, and a large part of their success can be put down to their defense.

San Francisco 49ers are a fearsome foe

Under the guidance of defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans, the 49ers have become the top defense in the league this year, giving up the fewest points per game at just 16.5 and the 2nd fewest yards per game at just 303.4, led by the likes of Nick Bosa who leads the league in both sacks and quarterback hits.

However the past few weeks have given them a little cause for concern as they have given up 20 points in back-to-back weeks for the second time this season, the latter of which saw them concede 34 to the Raiders in a game that went to overtime, what was more worrying is that it was Jarred Stidham that did it in his first career start.

And it’s performances like that which give former 49ers corner Richard Sherman cause for concern, as he explained on The Richard Sherman Podcast.

It certainly is a worrying trend, especially for a team that has prided itself on defense all year long. You just have to hope that other teams don’t look too closely at what the Raiders were able to do, because it might be difficult for them to make it through the playoffs if they’re giving up more than 30 each time.
