Southampton target Nicolas Jackson would ‘fit the bill’ as new manager Nathan Jones goes in search of some much-needed firepower, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Saints are believed to be in the market for a fresh source of goals at this moment in time and are one of several Premier League sides to have been linked with the 21-year-old.

Southampton transfer news – Nicolas Jackson

Back in August, Football Insider credited Southampton, Everton and Fulham with an interest in Jackson, who is said to have a £27 million release clause written into his Villarreal contract.

The Senegal international ended up staying put at the Estadio de la Cerámica, though, but The Athletic have recently revealed that the south coast club have ‘approached’ Villarreal over a possible deal.

It is understood that Jones’ charges are in negotiations with Jackson’s representatives about a six-month loan with an option to buy in the summer.

However, the report states that talks with Villarreal are yet to get underway and that Southampton are not looking to considerably overspend on targets during the January transfer window.

The Yellow Submarine are thought to be willing to listen to offers for Jackson after the versatile attacker saw his game time limited by new manager Quique Setien.

What has Jones said about Jackson?

When asked if Jackson is a realistic target for Southampton, Jones disclosed that he believes the youngster is likely to be on their wish list.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “From an attacking point of view, I would say that Saints have a whole list of options at the moment that they're going through.

“And this does sound like one that would actually fit the bill given that they are looking abroad for talent like this.”

Would Jackson be a good signing?

Jackson has registered three goals and three assists in 24 appearances across all competitions for Villarreal this term, helping them advance from their Europa Conference League group.

Only Che Adams has racked up more goal contributions than Jackon’s tally of six so far this season for Southampton, highlighting the impact his arrival could have.

It’s clear that Jackson is far from the finished article, but his ability to score and create goals could make him an invaluable addition as Southampton look to climb out of the relegation zone.

Dinamo Zagreb forward Mislav Orsic is reportedly close to joining Southampton, and Jackson would surely be another welcome addition.
