Newcastle United may be sensing an opportunity to secure the signature of Leicester City and Belgium midfielder Youri Tielemans for Eddie Howe’s side at St. James’ Park this month, CBS journalist Ben Jacobs has told GiveMeSport.

The 25-year-old has now entered the last six months of his £120k-per-week deal at the King Power Stadium and could leave the club for nothing at the end of the season amid potential interest from the Magpies.

Newcastle transfer news – Youri Tielemans

Jacobs has confirmed on The Done Deal Show recently that Newcastle are looking to sign Tielemans as a potential midfield option this month as they aim to secure a place in next season’s Champions League.

Meanwhile, The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has suggested that the Magpies are admirers of both Tielemans and James Maddison, but Leicester’s desire to keep the duo with the East Midlands outfit, for now, means that the club don’t expect either to arrive on Tyneside this window.

Transfer insider Dean Jones has suggested to GiveMeSport that Newcastle’s interest in the former Monaco man could “spark Arsenal into action” with the north London side holding an interest of their own in the midfielder.

However, Jacobs has suggested that there is a growing feeling that Newcastle could make an offer for Tielemans’ signature this month and may attempt to low-ball Leicester in a bid to test their resolve.

What has Jacobs said about Newcastle and Tielemans?

Jacobs told GiveMeSport: “In January, Tielemans will not suddenly be worth the £30m that perhaps Leicester wanted for him, because that contract has ticked down a little bit further.

“So, this is where Newcastle will be one to watch for Arsenal in particular because there's a growing feeling that Newcastle might consider a low offer for Tielemans in January to strengthen their midfield, to see how Leicester react.

“Leicester may say they don't want to get rid mid-season or Leicester may say they’re now resigned to losing Tielemans for free. But there's always that temptation if a reasonable but still much lower than the £30m or so from last summer is tabled.”

Would Tielemans be a good signing for Newcastle?

Having played in the Premier League for the last four years, Tielemans could prove to be an excellent addition to Howe’s midfield at St. James’ Park and could be the catalyst to see the club get over the line in the pursuit of Champions League football.

The 58-time Belgium international has made 18 Premier League appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ side this season, scoring three goals and providing one assist in that time, according to Transfermarkt.

And a WhoScored rating of 6.92 for his displays in the top flight this season ranks the £40m signing as the club’s second-best performer behind Maddison, showing that despite the side’s poor form, he is more than capable of standing up and being counted.

Therefore, it could be an interesting month ahead for Newcastle as they look to secure the signing of Tielemans at a fair price.
