Daniel Ricciardo has discussed the contact he had with Haas over a potential move in 2023 and the burnout he was feeling last season.

The Aussie will be off of the grid for 2023 with him bringing his stay with McLaren to an end a year early, after opting alongside the team to make the decision.

After the news broke that that was the case over the Belgian GP weekend, speculation began to mount over whether or not he'd be moving to a new team for 2023 or taking a year out and, indeed, Haas were one of those teams linked with taking him on.

Guenther Steiner revealed that he had been in contact with Ricciardo but, ultimately, no move materialised and the driver has spoken about that recently on the Beyond the Grid podcast, whilst also talking about the burnout he was feeling towards the end of 2022 - leading him to decide a year out was what he needed:

“I think coming back to a seat next year as Guenther [Steiner, Haas Team Principal] said, he reached out and stuff.

“The more days that passed and, especially as I did the triple-header to get back into the second half of the season, it became more and more clear that it wasn’t about what phone call I was receiving, it was about me acknowledging that I just ultimately don’t want to be competing next year.

“So, in a way I am glad that, let’s say, a top team didn’t reach out, because it's one of those ones where you probably feel, ‘Oh, I’ve got to sign it’, but I think deep down I was just craving a bit of distance.”

“You could call it some burnout, but I’m not afraid to admit that or say that, and it’s one of those ones where, you know, everyone will have an opinion and this and that, but it’s ultimately that I know what I feel, I know what I want. It was some of that."
