Manchester United defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka may have ‘rescued’ his career at Old Trafford in recent weeks, journalist Steve Bates has told GiveMeSport.

The 25-year-old was widely expected to seek pastures new in the January transfer window after finding opportunities hard to come by under Erik ten Hag, but that may no longer be the case.

Manchester United news – Aaron Wan-Bissaka

Back in June, Metro reported that Ten Hag had informed Wan-Bissaka that he was free to leave United as he did not feature in the Dutchman’s first-team plans.

However, The Athletic revealed in the final days of the summer transfer window that both Crystal Palace and West Ham saw approaches for the right-back rejected by the Red Devils as it would have been too late to bring in a replacement.

And Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano revealed just last month that United are ‘trying to find a solution for Wan-Bissaka to let him leave’.

Romano claimed that both Palace and the Hammers ‘remain interested’ in the former England Under-21 international while Wolverhampton Wanderers have also joined the race for his signature.

Yet despite the continued speculation, Wan-Bissaka has impressed of late in Diogo Dalot’s absence, sparking the possibility of him staying put this winter.

What has Bates said about Wan-Bissaka?

Bates has told GMS that he believes Wan-Bissaka has ‘obviously taken things onboard’ and that he may now get a second chance to prove his worth under Ten Hag.

He said: “He has obviously taken things onboard, and he is now showing a great degree of urgency in getting forward.

“And I think he may well have rescued his Man Utd career in just the last couple of weeks. Now, that's crazy to think that because he looked like a dead man walking at United.”

How well has Wan-Bissaka played?

Wan-Bissaka, who earns £100,000-per-week, provided an assist in the 2-0 victory at home to Burnley in the fourth round of the EFL Cup and has been defensively solid in the league.

As per WhoScored, no United player has bettered the full-back’s average total of 1.8 interceptions per top-flight fixture this season.

Ultimately, though, Wan-Bissaka is still relatively limited when in possession and arguably lacks the attacking ability needed to thrive long-term in Ten Hag’s possession-orientated setup.

Only time will tell if Wan-Bissaka has worked his way back into Ten Hag’s thinking, but he certainly hasn’t done himself any harm of late.
