Wout Weghorst appears on the verge of a loan switch to Manchester United - meaning one fan's previous comments about him have aged horribly.

The Netherlands striker is currently on loan at Besiktas from parent club Burnley. However, amid interest from United, the 30-year-old appeared to wave goodbye to fans of the Turkish club after scoring in their 2-1 win over Kasimpasa on Saturday.

As there is no break clause in the original loan deal between Besiktas and Burnley, both clubs will need to be involved in negotiations over any deal to take the player to Old Trafford. However, these appear to be progressing at pace.

Per a tweet from Terry Flewers of The Football Terrace on Sunday, "Besiktas are expected to meet Weghorst’s agent shortly.

"An agreement between Burnley and BeÅŸiktaÅŸ is approaching, with Burnley paying them to make the move happen. Weghorst has told the president that he wants to move to Manchester United."

A switch to the 'Theatre of Dreams' would be a remarkable career move for a player who - less than 12 months ago - was a virtual unknown on English shores.

Weghorst arrived in the Premier League on the final day of the January 2022 transfer window, joining Burnley from Wolfsburg in a £12.6m switch.

Soon afterwards, a clip of Mark Goldbridge of The United Stand YouTube channel stumbling across Weghorst's name for the first time when the striker's virtual equivalent scored against him on FIFA emerged on social media.

Needless to say, Goldbridge wasn't happy and unleashed a savage tirade against the striker, which has recently resurfaced on Twitter.

“Weghorst? That’s not even a real name,” declared Goldbridge after conceding.

“Wout Weghorst? You belong in a Harry Potter film.

“I’ve never heard of you in my b****y life. I’m losing to a Harry Potter character.”

Weghorst's Burnley stint got off to a fine start when he was named Man of the Match on his debut against - ironically - United themselves.

Ultimately, though, things didn't work out for the frontman at Turf Moor. He only scored twice last term as The Clarets were relegated to the Championship.

It's been a different story this season for Weghorst during his spell with Besiktas. Finding the net on nine occasions across 18 games, the Dutch striker hit form at just the right time to be included in Louis van Gaal's squad for the 2022 World Cup.

Weghorst stunned Argentina with two late goals to force their quarter-final clash to extra-time and penalties.

The Albiceleste would eventually prevail on spot-kicks, but Weghorst still managed to grab the headlines when he went viral for upsetting Lionel Messi after the ill-tempered encounter.

He might not have had the biggest name at the start of 2022, but the whole world was aware of Weghorst after that night.

Why are Manchester United interested in signing Weghorst?

With the Glazer family seemingly keen to sell the club as soon as possible, a transfer embargo of sorts is reportedly in place at Old Trafford.

Even after getting the sky-high wages of Cristiano Ronaldo off the books, the Red Devils are still likely to be restricted to only making loan signings during the January window.

Weghorst, then, perhaps ranks as one of the top options from a limited pool of potential candidates, hence why United are keen to get a deal done.

What does Goldbridge think about Weghorst today?

"I do know about Weghorst now. I'm not pro this deal, but I can see why Ten Hag is doing it," reasoned Goldbridge in his latest YouTube upload.

"Weghorst is 6ft, 6 inches and averages a goal every couple of games. Last season, there was a time when he was averaging more pressure [on opponents] than any other player in the Premier League.

"People see him as a target man, a battering ram, but he's actually got a little bit more to his game than that. He does press a lot. He's a pressing monster, really. Look, he's not useless."

However, he's also not Joao Felix of Atletico Madrid, who is Goldbridge's preferred option as an attacking reinforcement.

"Ten Hag's got to take what he can get. He's got to take something. He wanted [Cody] Gakpo, the club said 'no'. He wants Joao Felix, it looks like the club are saying 'no'.

"There is absolutely no way that when Ronaldo left Ten Hag said: 'I want Weghorst'. We've got to welcome him and hope he does well. Ten Hag's not been given what he deserves."
