Liverpool are keeping an eye on Matheus Nunes' progress, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

However, despite long-term interest in the Wolves midfielder, Jones doubts there will be any scope for the Reds to sign him this month.

Liverpool transfer news - Matheus Nunes

According to The Telegraph, Liverpool are exploring a deal to buy Nunes, which could be worth around £44m.

The outlet claims that if it goes through, the 24-year-old would be expected to move to Anfield at the end of this season.

Back in August, the MailOnline reported that Liverpool had pulled out of the race to sign Nunes when he was still at Sporting Lisbon, giving Wolves the opportunity to snap him up.

It appears, though, that their interest in him never truly disappeared.

What has Dean Jones said about Matheus Nunes and Liverpool?

While Liverpool opted against pursuing Nunes in the end for whatever reason, Jones says he remained on their shortlist.

Speaking to GMS, the journalist said: "There's not really going to be any scope to sign Matheus Nunes in this market. They did want him in the summer. That's true. They always planned to keep an eye on his progress. You know, that is true; that is continuing."

Is there any chance of Liverpool bringing Matheus Nunes to Anfield this month?

As Jones alluded to, it is very unlikely that Nunes becomes a member of Jurgen Klopp's squad in January.

"We can say that Matheus is our player," Wolves manager Julen Lopetegui recently said (via talkSPORT). "He’s a Wolves player and he’s so happy here."

The player himself also seems determined to improve at the club and show the Molineux faithful what he can do after making a slow start in England.

"I put more pressure on myself because I want to be the best, but I don’t think I did enough," the Portugal international told Wolves' official website. "I have the hunger now to get to where I want to be.

"I want to be better than I was in the last six months, and I think these first six months of 2023 are going to be better individually for me. I have that in my mind and I’m pretty sure that I’m going to show that."

Ultimately, it looks like Nunes will remain at Wolves for now. But what happens in the next transfer window is anyone's guess with Liverpool and Klopp circling.
