Rangers target Dion Sanderson would be a ‘great fit’ for new manager Michael Beale should he make the switch to Ibrox, journalist Pete O’Rourke has told GiveMeSport.

Sanderson is currently on loan at Birmingham City from Wolverhampton Wanderers but has reportedly caught the eye of the Gers hierarchy following a string of impressive performances.

Rangers transfer news – Dion Sanderson

The Sun have claimed that Rangers could swoop for the 23-year-old after director of football Ross Wilson and scout John Park ran the rule over him at the end of December.

Football Scotland then stated that Wolves do not have a January recall option for Sanderson, meaning current loan club Birmingham would have to allow any sale to Rangers.

It’s believed that Wolves value Sanderson at around £3 million, and Beale outlined the sort of players he is trying to bring into Rangers in a recent interview.

“I have to feel that they are someone who can come to Ibrox in front of 52,000 and really will grow and not shrink,” he said.

“That is the biggest question I have when I sit in front of a player – are they going to shrink at Ibrox or grow? We need growers and people who are going to come in in the next two or three years and help us win trophies and do well in Europe.”

What has O’Rourke said about Sanderson?

O’Rourke believes that Rangers will face ‘a lot of competition’ for Sanderson should Wolves sanction his sale but that he would fit into Beale’s plans well.

In an interview with GMS, he said: “I think there'll be a lot of competition for his signature if Wolves do decide to let him leave on a permanent basis.

“So, it won't be easy for Rangers, but I think he'd be a great fit for Michael Beale and his long-term plans at Ibrox.”

Where would Sanderson fit in?

Rangers have endured a mini injury crisis at centre-back in the first half of this season, and Sanderson, who can also play at right-back, would provide some much-needed cover and competition in that area of the pitch.

The likes of Connor Goldson, Ben Davies, John Souttar, and Filip Helander have all spent significant time on the treatment table due to various injury issues.

Meanwhile, Helander is also out of contract at Rangers in the summer, and given his inability to stay fit for a prolonged period of time, Sanderson may be viewed as his ideal heir.

Whether Beale can secure Sanderson’s signature in January remains to be seen, but he could prove to be a long-term target for the Rangers boss.
