Wolverhampton Wanderers ‘are interested in signing’ West Ham United defender Craig Dawson this January, Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth has told GiveMeSport.

The 32-year-old is eager to depart the London Stadium and return to the Midlands for family reasons, and Molineux has been sounded out as a potential landing spot for him.

Wolverhampton Wanderers transfer news – Craig Dawson

Sheth recently revealed that West Ham are ‘open to offers’ for Dawson in this winter transfer window but would ‘ideally’ want to sign a replacement first.

The reliable journalist stated that Wolves have revived their interest in him after coming close to securing his signature over the summer before a last-minute deal fell through on deadline day.

Dawson has entered the final six months of his current £52,000-per-week contract, and therefore, could be available in a cut-price deal.

Wolves failed to properly replace Romain Saiss, Conor Coady and Willy Boly over the summer, and Dawson would add some much-needed experience to Wolves’ options at centre-back.

What has Sheth said about Dawson?

In an interview with GMS, Sheth said: “Bit of deja vu with this one, isn't it. Wolves are interested in signing Craig Dawson on a permanent deal. He's only got six months left on his contract.

“If you go back to the summer, they thought they got him on deadline day. But it was dependent on West Ham United bringing in Jan Bednarek, I think it was, from Southampton.

“And if all those pieces fell into place, he was free to go to Wolves because West Ham are quite understanding that he's still commuting from the Midlands. He lives in the Midlands, he wanted to be nearer to home and his family.”

Would Dawson be a good signing?

Dawson initially appeared to have slipped down David Moyes’ pecking order at West Ham in the opening weeks of the season, but he has been back in favour of late.

The 6 foot 2 ace has scored one goal in his 13 appearances across all competitions for the capital club so far this season while also putting up some impressive underlying numbers.

As per WhoScored, Dawson has won 1.8 aerial duels, made 3.3 clearances, and pulled off 0.8 blocks per Premier League game in 2022/23, placing him in the top three for each metric amongst his teammates.

Julen Lopetegui would, therefore, be adding an experienced top-flight defender to his ranks who is clearly still capable of making a solid contribution should Dawson make the switch.
