Tottenham Hotspur are "leading the race" for Sporting Lisbon defender Pedro Porro, Fabrizio Romano has informed GiveMeSport.

The 23-year-old has also been linked with a move to Chelsea, but Romano says Spurs are the club who are actively working to sign him right now.

Tottenham transfer news - Pedro Porro

According to 90min, Chelsea have identified Porro as a potential option for the right-back position and are now ready to do battle with Tottenham for his signature.

In terms of how much he could cost, the same outlet states that the Spaniard has a €45m (around £40m) release clause in his contract.

Talk of Chelsea being interested in a right-back comes as no surprise given Reece James' injury problems this season.

However, if they are to land Porro, it looks like they will have to see off competition from their former manager Antonio Conte and Tottenham.

What has Fabrizio Romano said about Pedro Porro and Tottenham?

Despite the links to Chelsea, Romano says Tottenham are the club who are currently at the front of the queue for Porro's signature.

Speaking to GMS, the transfer expert said: "For Pedro Porro, Tottenham are the club leading the race. For Chelsea, we have many links, but at the moment I'm told that the club who are actively working to sign Pedro Porro is Tottenham."

Whose place in Tottenham's squad could Pedro Porro take?

Conte currently has three right wing-backs, so if Porro arrives at Hotspur Way, you would expect at least one of them to go. Out of Emerson Royal, Matt Doherty and Djed Spence, the last of that trio looks the most likely to leave if Conte's plan is to have three players for that position.

Spence has barely played this season following his arrival from Middlesbrough last July. In fact, the 22-year-old is yet to make a start in the Premier League, as per Transfermarkt.

Conte has also admitted that he was not his signing, but rather someone who the club pushed for. When you consider that and the above, there is a good chance that Spence becomes the casualty if Tottenham manage to land Porro, who has been described as a "sensational" right-back by football writer Zach Lowy.

With Porro almost certain to start given his price tag, though, it would not be a surprise to see one of the other two also leave north London in a bid to get guaranteed game time.
