Manchester United don’t have money to spend on adding to Erik ten Hag’s squad at Old Trafford despite their interest in Leicester City midfielder Youri Tielemans this month, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils are hoping for a solid second half of the campaign as the club competes in four competitions over the coming weeks.

Man Utd transfer news – January

Manchester United have made two signings at Old Trafford this month, both of whom have arrived on loan until the end of the current season.

Burnley striker Wout Weghorst has joined ten Hag’s squad after the Red Devils paid Besiktas a fee worth around £2.5m to cancel his loan from the Clarets with the Süper Lig giants, to secure his services for the remainder of the campaign.

Meanwhile, Crystal Palace goalkeeper Jack Butland has also arrived temporarily, after the club’s former loanee Martin Dúbravka was recalled to St. James’ Park by his parent club Newcastle United, with the 29-year-old Englishman expected to act as a back-up to first-choice David de Gea.

And according to Belgian journalist Sacha Tavolieri (via SI), United have now set their sights on recruiting Tielemans, who has six months remaining on his £120k-per-week contract at the King Power Stadium, after Donny van de Beek has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a knee injury.

But Jones is informed that the club simply don’t have the money to spend in the transfer market at the time of writing.

What has Jones said about Man Utd?

Jones told GiveMeSport: “With Tielemans, it's probably a similar situation to why Arsenal won’t spend any money on him. The player is going to become available on a free at the end of the season. If they really want him, they could probably see that out.

“I know he wouldn't cost a fortune right now, but ultimately the message out of Man Utd is that they don't have money to spend at the moment.”

Who have Man Utd been linked with this month?

Tielemans would likely be an excellent signing for the Red Devils this month, having made 139 Premier League appearances and hitting the back of the net 21 times whilst providing 20 assists since his initial loan arrival in the East Midlands during January 2019, as per Transfermarkt.

Leicester know they are now likely to make a loss on the 25-year-old service's whether they sell him for a fee now or lose him as a free agent in January, having paid £40m for the former Monaco three and a half years ago.

Despite United not having the funds to spend big this month, they have been linked with a multitude of different players.

According to The Sun, ten Hag is still keen on signing his former centre-back at Ajax in the form of Jurrien Timber, whom he held an interest in during the summer transfer window.

Meanwhile, the Manchester Evening News has claimed that the Red Devils may look to make a move for Gonçalo Ramos and Mohammed Kudus in the summer, suggesting that the club’s signing of Weghorst is unlikely to be extended past the conclusion of the current season.

And ESPN has indicated that United could attempt to secure the sensational signing of Tottenham Hotspur talisman and England captain Harry Kane, with the 29-year-old having now entered the final 18 months of his deal with the Lilywhites.

Therefore, it seems that United could be looking to avoid spending money this month as they look to secure a haul of top-quality players in the summer window.
