Aston Villa are yet to make an official proposal to Marseille about the potential signing of midfielder Mattéo Guendouzi for Unai Emery’s squad at Villa Park, transfer guru Fabrizio Romano has told GiveMeSport.

The Villans are looking to provide their Spanish head coach with several additions this month as he looks to put his own stamp on the side.

Aston Villa transfer news – Mattéo Guendouzi

According to CBS reporter Ben Jacobs, Aston Villa are working on a deal to lure Guendouzi to Villa Park this month, with the Frenchman being open to a reunion with Emery.

The same journalist has suggested that Marseille are looking at a transfer fee of close to £44m, but RMC Sport's Fabrice Hawkins has now stated that the Villans are preparing an offer worth £26m.

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has recently told GiveMeSport that the West Midlands outfit have a “genuine interest” in signing Guendouzi this winter, who has previously worked with Emery during the pair’s spell together at Arsenal.

And Romano has said that, at the time of writing, Villa are yet to make an official offer to the Ligue 1 club, but they are pursuing the 23-year-old’s signature in January.

What has Romano said about Aston Villa and Guendouzi?

Romano told GiveMeSport: “For Guendouzi, Marseille are still waiting for Aston Villa to make an official proposal to them, but they are pursuing the player.”

Would Guendouzi be a good signing for Aston Villa?

Guendouzi – who has been described as a “natural leader” by Jorge Sampaoli – has made 25 appearances for Marseille this season, hitting the back of the net four times whilst providing four assists, as per Transfermarkt.

The former Arsenal man’s displays in the French top flight have earned him a Sofascore rating of 6.93, having made 1.2 tackles and 0.9 interceptions per game, suggesting he is capable of breaking the play up in the middle of the park.

The seven-cap France international compares reasonably with his positional peers, ranking in the top 11% of midfielders across Europe’s big five leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League for progressive passes received (3.38) and the top 16% for assists provided per 90 minutes (0.17) over the last 365 days, as per FBref.

Therefore, Guendouzi may feel that he’d like to have another crack at making a name for himself in the Premier League and reuniting with his former manager at a club seemingly on the up could be the perfect move for the Frenchman.
