Chelsea have made contact with the agent of Real Valladolid right-back Iván Fresneda this week, as Graham Potter looks to add to his squad at Stamford Bridge, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The Blues are looking to sign some of the world’s finest young talent as the club looks towards the future.

Chelsea transfer news – Iván Fresneda

Real Valladolid director David Espinar has confirmed that there is substantial interest in the services of Fresneda this month, but has also stated that there haven’t been any firm offers made for the young right-back as of yet.

Espinar said in a press conference (via The Metro): “No firm offer has arrived for Fresneda, but there is a lot of interest.”

The same report has said that Arsenal, Newcastle United, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Real Madrid and Juventus have all been credited with an interest in the 18-year-old, suggesting that the talent has been noticed across Europe as well as amongst Premier League sides.

Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor has recently hinted at Arsenal’s interest in the starlet to GiveMeSport and has said that Gunners full-back Cedric Soares could be moved on if the north London side are successful in luring the teenager to the Emirates Stadium, whilst talkSPORT has reported that the north London side are leading the race for his signature.

But Phillips has also suggested that Chelsea have made contact with his agent, and Fresneda – who is reportedly available for just £9m – could be set for a big move “pretty soon.”

What has Phillips said about Chelsea and Fresneda?

Phillips told GiveMeSport: “They've spoken to his agent this week, but so have quite a few clubs in England. It's an interesting link and he's a very good player. He’s certainly one that's going to get a big move pretty soon.”

Would Fresneda be a good signing for Chelsea?

Fresneda – who has been described as a “very special talent” by ESPN’s David Cartlidge – has made 11 appearances for Valladolid this season, helping contribute a singular clean sheet with no attacking numbers as of yet, as per Transfermarkt.

An average WhoScored rating of 6.73 for his displays in the Spanish top-flight this campaign ranks him as the side’s fifth-best-performing player, suggesting that he is not daunted by senior football, despite his young age.

The talent also compares favourably with his positional peers, ranking in the top 1% of full-backs across Europe’s big five leagues as well as the Champions League and Europa League for tackles (3.54), top 5% for clearances (3.17) and top 9% for interceptions per 90 minutes (1.59) over the last 365 days, as per FBref.

Therefore, the potential arrival of Fresneda at Stamford Bridge may look to be a signing for the future, but if he can nail down a place in Potter’s starting XI, it may be a struggle to displace him from the Chelsea side.
