Chelsea definitely have an ‘interest’ in Brentford goalkeeper David Raya as manager Graham Potter continues to revamp his first-team squad, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The 27-year-old has been in fine form for the Bees throughout this season, and he has been linked with a move to several top Premier League clubs in recent weeks as a result.

Chelsea transfer news – David Raya

A report from The Telegraph has stated that Raya is expected to leave Brentford at the end of the current campaign following the speculation surround his future.

The Spain international only has 18 months remaining on his existing £25,000-per-week contract, and Thomas Frank’s charges will surely be eager not to lose him on a free transfer.

However, Chelsea are far from the only side eager to prise Raya away from the Brentford Community Stadium as Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur are also listed as potential suitors.

All three English heavyweights are believed to be in the market for a new shot-stopper, and Raya could be available in a cut-price deal.

It’s believed that Brentford will only be able to demand between £15 million and £20 million for the in-demand star due to his contract situation, meaning Chelsea, United or Spurs could secure themselves a bargain.

What has Phillips said about Raya?

Phillips has told GMS that Raya was ‘one of the names’ he was given when asking about Chelsea’s possible goalkeeper targets, so he is sure they are monitoring his situation.

He said: “I did an article probably about two or three weeks ago on goalkeepers because I was told at the time that Chelsea are not talking with (Edouard) Mendy at the moment about a new contract, and it is looking likely that he could be heading out in the summer.

“So, Chelsea had been making plans for goalkeepers for the last two or three months. And Raya was one of the names I was given when I first wrote that article, so I know that there's interest.”

Would Raya be a good signing?

Raya has played a pivotal part in Brentford’s success in recent years, helping them claim promotion from the Championship in 2020/21 by keeping 17 clean sheets in 45 appearances.

The 6 foot ace has then helped the west London outfit cement their top-flight status over the last 18 months, leaking just 55 goals in 43 Premier League games, recording 14 clean sheets along the way.

Therefore, Raya may prove to be an extremely astute purchase for Chelsea should he make the switch to Stamford Bridge in the summer.
