Manchester United could look to sign Ajax defender Jurriën Timber in the summer as a replacement for one of Victor Lindelöf or Harry Maguire for Erik ten Hag’s side at Old Trafford, transfer insider Dean Jones has suggested to GiveMeSport.

The Red Devils duo have struggled for regular game time under their Dutch head coach this season.

Man Utd transfer news – Jurriën Timber

According to The Sun, ten Hag has provided his European scouts with a list of a dozen young Dutch starlets to keep an eye on, as he looks ahead to his long-term future at Old Trafford.

The same publication says that the former Ajax head coach would like to lower the average age of his squad in the next 18 months and is looking at the potential of acquiring some of the best young talents the Netherlands has to offer.

Timber is still believed to be one of the names on ten Hag’s list after the Red Devils led an unsuccessful pursuit of the versatile Ajax defender last summer.

Back in May of last year, Daily Express journalist Ryan Taylor hinted to GiveMeSport that the 21-year-old could have followed ten Hag to Old Trafford, but despite interest in a £35m transfer, a move never materialised.

However, Jones now believes that there is a chance that Timber could be headed to Manchester in the summer, with Maguire and Lindelöf’s future looking uncertain.

What has Jones said about Man Utd?

When asked if he could foresee United reigniting their interest in Timber this summer, Jones told GiveMeSport: “It's definitely got to be a possibility. You look at the Lindelöf and Maguire situations. It's pretty likely one of those two leaves, at least.”

Would Timber be an upgrade on Lindelöf and Maguire?

Timber – who has been described as “exceptional” by Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig – would seem to fit in with United’s tendency to acquire players from the Eredivisie since ten Hag’s arrival, having signed both Antony and Lisandro Martínez from Ajax last summer.

The 14-cap Netherlands international has made 17 Eredivisie appearances for Ajax this season, keeping five clean sheets whilst providing two assists along the way as per Transfermarkt.

Meanwhile, Lindelöf and Maguire – who earn a reported combined £300k-per-week – have struggled to make an impact on ten Hag’s side this campaign, with the Swede having made just six Premier League appearances, whilst the 53-cap England international has played in eight top-flight fixtures.

Therefore, it seems like it would be a sensible move for the Red Devils to dispose of the 28 and 29-year-olds respectively, and bring in Timber as a cheaper replacement, who is likely to have a much higher ceiling than the current United duo.
