Chelsea target Denzel Dumfries' agent 'has been in London this week' and a potential move to Stamford Bridge has been discussed with Inter Milan, journalist Simon Phillips has told GiveMeSport.

The Blues have not been afraid to splash the cash since the transfer window reopened, with Mykhailo Mudryk costing £88.5million, but head coach Graham Potter could still welcome further reinforcements to the capital ahead of the deadline.

Chelsea transfer news - Denzel Dumfries

According to Italian media outlet La Repubblica, Chelsea have headed to the negotiating table with a £31million bid for Dumfries.

However, the report suggests the opening offer falls significantly short of Inter's demands as they are seeking a fee in the region of £48million for the right-back.

Chelsea are understood to be leading a host of Premier League clubs for Dumfries' signature as a move away from the San Siro could be sanctioned this month.

Manchester United have held discussions over the Netherlands international but, unlike the west Londoners, they have not tested Inter's resolve with an official offer.

Respected journalist Pete O'Rourke recently told GiveMeSport that Dumfries would be a 'huge signing' for Aston Villa after the Midlands outfit have been linked with a move.

What has Simon Phillips said about Dumfries?

Phillips understands that Dumfries' representatives have been in the capital speaking to numerous suitors about a potential move away from Inter.

The journalist is aware that Chelsea are among the clubs to have held discussions over a mid-season switch.

Phillips told GiveMeSport: "With Dumfries, I believe his agent has been in London this week speaking to a number of clubs.

"One of them has been Chelsea, but he's got a lot of interested clubs. Chelsea have spoken to Inter about a potential deal."

Would Dumfries be a good signing for Chelsea?

Dumfries has shown that he is capable of being a huge presence in the final third of the pitch as, according to Transfermarkt, he has found the back of the net 29 times and registered a further 43 assists over the course of his senior club career.

That is no mean feat for a full-back, with five of those goal contributions coming so far this season.

Reece James is currently on the sidelines after sustaining a knee injury shortly before the turn of the year, but Dumfries could provide him with stiff competition in the long-term.

FBref statistics show the 26-year-old has averaged more assists, shots and blocks per 90 minutes than the Chelsea academy product this season, which emphasises that he contributes at both ends of the pitch.

Dumfries also shone at the World Cup, with Sofascore data demonstrating he averaged 1.6 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per outing for the Netherlands in Qatar, and the west Londoners should not hesitate in heading to Inter with a second proposal.
