Chelsea could make a move for Brighton & Hove Albion goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, journalist Simon Phillips has now told GIVEMESPORT.

Graham Potter's side are said to be on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, with Sanchez emerging as one of the potential options, according to Phillips.

Chelsea transfer news - Robert Sanchez

As demonstrated in recent weeks following a number of errors from Kepa Arrizabalaga, goalkeeper remains a problem position for Chelsea.

Having appeared to solve their goalkeeper conundrum with the signing of Edouard Mendy in September 2020, the Senegalese shot-stopper has not been favoured by new boss Potter, with Kepa being the one trusted between the sticks.

However, in a new report from The Evening Standard, it appears one of Kepa or Mendy could be sold in the summer window to make way for a new goalkeeper.

Mendy, the Evening Standard report reads, is most likely to be let go, having rejected the chance to extend his contract at Stamford Bridge.

It's suggested, as per the report, Brentford's David Raya has been identified as a potential replacement for Mendy, with the Spanish goalkeeper also attracting interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United.

Yet, there are rumours Raya's compatriot Sanchez - who is rumoured to be available for £50 million - could also be on the list of Chelsea targets too.

What has Simon Phillips said about Sanchez to Chelsea?

Speaking in an interview with GMS, Phillips hinted the Brighton shot-stopper will be an option for Chelsea heading into the summer window.

On the goalkeeper situation at Chelsea, Phillips said: "David Raya definitely isn’t the only one. There’s probably a good handful on the shortlist of goalkeepers that could come in.

"High up on the list is Robert Sanchez from Brighton as well. He’s another one Chelsea are taking a closer look at.”

Would Sanchez be a worthwhile signing for Chelsea?

Having been with Brighton since 2018, Sanchez has made over 80 appearances for the Seagulls and has been part of the squad that has helped establish the south coast outfit in the top flight.

Sanchez, who pockets £25,000 a week at Brighton, has over two years left on his remaining contract, indicating Brighton would be in a strong negotiating position.

That being said, it's clear to see why Chelsea are interested in Sanchez, with the 25-year-old finishing inside the top six for clean sheets in the Premier League last season (Premier League).

What's more Sanchez, who boasts a 6ft 6in frame, has proven himself to be a commanding figure in the penalty area, with FBref ranking him inside the top five per cent for crosses claimed.

However, when compared to fellow Spanish international Raya, the Brighton goalkeeper does have fewer saves in the league this season, with his compatriot boasting almost double the number Sanchez has managed (Premier League).
