Chelsea could return to Brighton & Hove Albion with an 'increased offer' this week as they look to lure Moises Caicedo to Stamford Bridge, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Blues have already spent big during the January window, with Mykhailo Mudryk being the most expensive arrival at £88.5million, but head coach Graham Potter has the opportunity to strengthen his squad even further ahead of the deadline.

Chelsea transfer news - Moises Caicedo

According to The Guardian, Potter is desperate to bring in midfield reinforcements and an improved bid for Caicedo remains a possibility after Chelsea failed with their initial attempt to strike a deal.

The report suggests Brighton are scouring the market for potential replacements in case the 21-year-old seals a move away from the Amex Stadium in the coming days.

Chelsea's opening proposal, worth £55million, was rejected as Caicedo is valued significantly higher than that figure and the Seagulls insist he is not for sale.

It is understood that Brighton would only consider sanctioning the Ecuador international's mid-season exit if a bid worth upwards of £75million is tabled.

Respected journalist Simon Phillips recently told GiveMeSport that Chelsea have not given up in their pursuit of Caicedo and a fresh offer is expected to be lodged by Wednesday.

What has Dean Jones said about Caicedo?

Jones believes there is a chance that Chelsea will test Brighton's resolve by heading back into negotiations over Caicedo in the coming days.

However, the journalist has doubts over whether the central midfielder will end up in west London ahead of the fast-approaching transfer deadline.

Jones told GiveMeSport: "There's a possibility that they will go in with an increased offer for Caicedo this week.

"The problem is that, from what I'm hearing, I still don't think it's going to get to a level whereby it meets Brighton's valuation.

"I think expectations should be a little bit limited here from a Chelsea fan's point of view."

Would Caicedo be a good signing for Chelsea?

According to FBref, Caicedo has averaged more tackles and blocks per 90 minutes than Denis Zakaria and N'Golo Kante this season, which emphasises that he could bring more solidity to Chelsea's midfield.

The South American also boasts Premier League experience, having made 26 appearances in the competition for Brighton, and that will be an additional attraction for the Blues as it means he would not need to be handed time to get up to speed.

Potter will be confident that he can get the best out of Caicedo, who linked up with a new agency recently.

That is because the Chelsea chief selected the former Independiente del Valle man 16 times while he was in the Brighton dugout.

Potter offered Caicedo his first chance in English football, having struck a £4.5million deal close to two years ago, and he should do all he can to seal a reunion in the capital.
