Southampton boss Nathan Jones could pull off a 'potentially good signing' by tempting Genk star Paul Onuachu to St Mary's, transfer insider Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

Having completed the £8million capture of Mislav Orsic and forked out a further £12million for Argentinian midfielder Carlos Alcaraz, Saints still have the opportunity to welcome more fresh faces to the south coast ahead of the winter window slamming shut.

Southampton transfer news - Paul Onuachu

According to respected journalist Sacha Tavolieri, Southampton have been frustrated in their initial efforts to strike a deal for Onuachu.

He suggests Saints have seen a £10.6million bid rejected and Belgian side Genk are eager to keep the striker out of his suitors' clutches as they challenge for the Jupiler Pro League title.

It seems that Southampton will need to return to the negotiating table quickly as it has emerged that Onuachu is currently in talks with reigning Europa League champions Eintracht Frankfurt over a potential move to Germany.

Manchester United, Aston Villa, Everton and West Ham United are additional suitors, but Genk would only sanction the Nigeria international's mid-season exit if a bid in the region of £22million is lodged.

Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano recently told GiveMeSport that Southampton are expected to make up to three more signings ahead of the fast-approaching January deadline.

What has Dean Jones said about Onuachu?

Jones believes Southampton could complete an astute piece of business by winning the race for Onuachu.

However, the journalist is aware of clubs currently competing in the Champions League also coveting the 6 ft 7 colossus.

Jones told GiveMeSport: "I think Onuachu is a potentially good signing. He's actually a bit more experienced and a little bit older than some of the other names that I had been hearing in terms of Saints' targets. I think that's a positive and he is pretty good.

"He's also been looked at by a lot of Champions League clubs, so I think it's a good conversation to be involved in."

What would Onuachu add to Southampton's squad?

Onuachu has got his name on the scoresheet 162 times and registered a further 34 assists over the course of his senior club career, according to Transfermarkt, so it is abundantly clear that he is a threat in the final third of the pitch.

Saints are crying out for a prolific goalscorer, with Wolverhampton Wanderers and Everton being the only Premier League sides to find the back of the net less frequently this season, and the Genk target-man could be the perfect option.

Onuachu is in fine form and Sofascore statistics show he has been on target every 81 minutes, on average, in the Belgian top flight this term.

Genk are currently top of the table, but they would not be in that position without the 28-year-old's 14 goals in the competition.

WhoScored data demonstrates that Onuachu wins 1.9 aerial battles per domestic encounter, which should not come as a surprise considering his stature, but it highlights how he could make Southampton a major threat with the likes of James Ward-Prowse putting crosses into the box.
