West Ham United are ‘looking’ to sign a new central defender this month to bolster David Moyes’ options in defence, journalist Dean Jones has told GiveMeSport.

The Hammers are struggling at the wrong end of the Premier League table and are looking to use the January transfer window as an opportunity to move themselves away from the relegation zone.

West Ham transfer news – centre-back

West Ham have offloaded experienced campaigner Craig Dawson this winter as he wanted to move back to the Midlands for family reasons.

Fellow Premier League outfit Wolverhampton Wanderers snapped up the 32-year-old in a £3.3 million deal, leaving Moyes needing some additional strength in depth at the heart of defence.

The likes of Nayef Aguerd, Thilo Kehrer, Kurt Zouma and Angelo Ogbonna are available for selection for West Ham, but their extensive injury issues mean more cover and competition for places may be required.

However, with the capital club currently lingering just above the bottom three, Moyes may face a difficult task in trying to persuade his top targets to join his relegation-threatened side at this moment in time.

What has Jones said about West Ham?

West Ham splashed out around £150 million on new signings over the summer, but they have been unable to hit the ground running in east London.

Despite that, Jones has told GMS that their lack of depth at centre-back is something Moyes is aiming to address this January and that he ‘definitely’ expects someone to be signed in that area of the pitch.

He said: “It's something that they're looking to change, and I would definitely expect a centre-back to land.”

Who could West Ham sign?

Back in November, West Ham insider Claret & Hugh claimed that Moyes’ charges ‘could make a January move’ for Fulham defender Tosin Adarabioyo.

It’s claimed that the Cottagers value the centre-back, who has just 18 months remaining on his existing contract, at around £16 million.

And transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has provided a recent update on the 25-year-old’s situation, stating that he has ‘chances to leave Fulham’ in this window and that he feels ready to take the next step in his career.

West Ham may have to move quickly if they want to sign Adarabioyo, though, as Romano has revealed several top clubs across Europe including Monaco are monitoring his situation.
