Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have helped transform the fortunes of the Wrexham men's team and they've set their sights on doing the same for the women. After buying the club back in 2021, both Reynolds and McElhenney publicly stated that they planned to invest in the women's programme and they have now applied for the side to play in the Welsh women's top flight next season."The strength of the @WrexhamAFCWomen is a big part of why @RMcElhenney and I wanted to be a part of this [club]," Reynolds wrote on Twitter last year. The women's team currently play in the second tier of the Welsh football pyramid and are top of the table with six wins from six games.

How does the Welsh football pyramid work?

Promotion in Welsh women's football can only be confirmed once a licence is granted to play in the top flight.

Last season, Wrexham finished second in the Genaro Adran North but chose not to apply for the licence.

The team were actually initial founders of the Women's Welsh Premier League in 2009 but were soon forced to disband.

Having reformed in 2018 as Wrexham AFC Women, they appear to be on the right track once again.

Currently, there are eight teams in the Adran Premier division, which include Welsh giants Cardiff City and Swansea.

Cardiff Metropolitan Ladies are also in the division and sit third in the league behind Cardiff and Swansea respectively.

Aside from Wrexham, Briton Ferry and Cascade have also applied to be in the Welsh Premier League.

All applications are due to be assessed from March onwards.

How Reynolds and McElhenney transformed Wrexham

Since buying the club, Wrexham have been subject to widespread media attention with many interested in how Reynolds and McElhenney are going about things.

In the 2021/22 season, the side finished second in the National League, before losing in the play-offs to Grimsby Town.

Wrexham also made it to the final of the 2022 FA Trophy but lost 1-0 to Bromley.

The fortunes of the team were documented in a series called Welcome to Wrexham which came out in August 2022.

"Our show focuses on the Wrexham community as much as it does the club and as much as it does our experience trying or attempting to run this club with having no previous experience," Reynolds said of the series.

McElhenney added: "We have been so respectful all the way through the process, recognising where our place is as an American and a Canadian coming into their community, we recognise we had to tread very lightly."
