Manchester United have one foot firmly in the 2022/23 Carabao Cup final.

In the first leg of their semi-final tie against Nottingham Forest, Erik ten Hag's side walked away with a resounding 3-0 win.

It wasn't the finest United performance of the season at the City Ground, but they were clinical in front of goal.

A first half solo strike from the irrepressible Marcus Rashford got the ball rolling and just before the half-time break, January signing Wout Weghorst bagged his first goal for the Red Devils.

The giant Dutch striker showed great awareness to stay onside and then convert from close-range after Wayne Hennessey saved Antony's powerful effort.

Bruno Fernandes then put the icing on the cake for United in the 89th minute with a top-quality finish on the half volley to make it 3-0.

If Forest manage to come back from that scoreline at Old Trafford next week, it'll be one of English football's greatest shocks.

Things could have been so, so different for Steve Cooper's side on Wednesday, though.

Soon after Rashford's goal, the two-time European Cup winners thought they had equalised after Sam Surridge capped off a sweeping counterattack.

But as it does far too regularly, VAR stepped in and spoiled the party. To be fair, Surridge had clearly gone too early and strayed offside.

So the goal was chalked off, which meant several Forest players looked rather foolish.

Why's that? Well, Surridge and Morgan Gibbs-White decided to perform Cristiano Ronaldo's celebration after the net bulged, which perhaps wasn't the smartest of moves.

Ouch...

In the VAR era, it's perhaps wise to hold off on a garish celebration if there's a chance the technology could interfere.

Unfortunately, that's the world we live in these days.

So, Forest's chances of reaching Wembley are now slim to nil and that means we could see United lift a trophy for the first time since 2017.

Although Newcastle may have something to say about that.

Eddie Howe's side are on course to reach the Carabao Cup final themselves after beating Southampton 1-0 in their semi-final first leg and they will be a formidable opponent at the home stadium.

Even Rashford will struggle to breach Newcastle's seemingly impregnable defence...
