Stone Cold Steve Austin has been in talks with WWE over two "monster" matches at WrestleMania 39, according to reports.

On Monday, it was reported that WWE is considering having Austin face Roman Reigns at the show in April, but only if The Rock can't make the show.

However, mere hours later, it was reported that instead of Roman, Triple H actually wanted Stone Cold to face Brock Lesnar at the show.

What did WWE actually pitch to Stone Cold Steve Austin?

It seems like the reason for the conflicting reports is actually because WWE made two pitches to Austin for WrestleMania 39.

According to the Wrestling Observer, several months ago, Triple H approached Stone Cold about facing Brock Lesnar at the big show in April 2023.

Whether down to financial issues or the fact he just didn't like the pitch, it seems like Stone Cold didn't agree to the match, meaning it now won't be happening.

However, both Fightful and the Wrestling Observer are now reporting that the second pitch for Austin was for a match with Roman Reigns at the show.

At the time of writing, there's no word on whether or not the match is going to happen, but we do know that the latest pitch sent Austin's way was for a match with the Undisputed WWE Universal Champion.

Will Stone Cold Steve Austin v Roman Reigns happen?

It's worth noting that neither publication is reporting that Stone Cold v Reigns is 100% going to happen at WrestleMania, just that the WWE Hall of Famer was approached with a pitch for the match.

The feeling amongst fans is that Stone Cold will only work the match if The Rock, who has been rumoured to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania for over a year now, can't make the show.

In fact, on that note, some have even questioned whether or reports that The Rock can't make the show are being leaked to throw people off the scent of his imminent return.

If WWE doesn't go with either The Rock or Stone Cold for Roman's WrestleMania, then it's believed that either Cody Rhodes or Sami Zayn will be drafted in.

Fans won't have to wait too long to find out though, as the Royal Rumble this weekend will give them a better indication of WWE's plans for the main event of WrestleMania 39.
