Frederic Vasseur has said that it has been made 'crystal clear' to both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz that Ferrari will not have a number 1 driver, at least to start with this coming F1 season.

The Prancing Horse burst out of the starting gates in 2022 with two wins from the opening three Grands Prix but, soon after, it began to stumble with reliability issues, strategy errors and mistakes creeping in.

Indeed, as they faltered, Red Bull grew stronger and stronger and, before too long, the championship was a foregone conclusion.

Despite those difficulties, however, Ferrari can still take plenty of positives from the 2022 campaign, with their car very quick and competitive on plenty of occasions, and if they can just find consistency they should be able to challenge for the championship this season.

Both Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz will be hoping that that is the case this year, too, and both are set to get equal treatment from the off in 2023, with their new boss Vasseur dispelling the idea that one might be favoured over the other:

"The target of the team is to win - with Ferrari and for Ferrari, this is the policy of the team," Vasseur said to Sky Italy.

"I already spoke with the drivers about this. It's crystal clear that we'll give them exactly the same treatment and we'll support both of them in the same way.

"For sure, if at one stage during the season, one is in a much better place to fight for the championship, we'll have to take action, but it's not that one will be the number one from the beginning of the season.

"This can't work because you never know what will happen, and we have to do the best for the team, not for the drivers."

Of course, if one is streets ahead of the other at some point in the year the call will be made to prioritise that driver.

There had been suggestions that Leclerc could be made no.1 from the start, meanwhile, given his relationship with Vasseur from their days at Sauber.

However, such talk seems wide of the mark, and also disregards the fact that the new Ferrari boss and Sainz also have an established relationship from the past as well.

Full focus for Ferrari is on starting quickly this season, then, and both drivers will be seeking a repeat of the double podium they enjoyed in Bahrain in 2022.
